Food Pantrys

Image
Repost from FB  ... I went to the food bank today hoping I’d leave with enough to make a few actual meals for the week—something simple, filling, and realistic that would help me get through the next several days without stressing over every single bite. And before anyone says it, yes—I’m grateful. I stood in line patiently. I smiled. I said thank you. Because I know there are people volunteering their time, donating what they can, and trying to help however possible. I don’t take that lightly at all. But when I got home and started unloading everything onto the table, I just kind of stopped and stared at it for a minute. Rows of canned goods. Beans. Soup. Tomatoes. Ravioli. Corn. Peas. Chili. Pasta. Rice. Peanut butter. Sugar. Flour. A lot of shelf-stable items. A lot of “ingredients.” And the overwhelming thought in my head was: What do I actually make with all this? Because surviving and eating well are not always the same thing. People imagine food assistance as relief—a...

Simple Sunday Happy Mothers Day

Elementary She Read by Vicki Delaney M Review

Image
And I thought  . . .  I enjoyed back tracking to book 1 in a newly found favorite  series.  The character Gemma Doyle a British  lady living in the U.S. is a great character.   In book 1 the background of Gemma's relationship with  her ex police Detective  Ryan is explained.    Gemma ends up being a person interest in the murder of an older woman because  she happens to find the body.   As the police Detective  Estrada searches for evidence of Gemma's involvement in first 1 and then 2 murders Gemma does her own sleuthing.  A favorite  scene was when Gemma got creative  and bribed a couple of high school boys to use thier phone to report murder #2 anonymously not wanting more attention drawn to herself.   As always this was a fast paced read for me.  I enjoyed an audio version.

Foodie Friday

My meals from the week.   I was glad to use alot from my freezer  and pantry to make healthy meals.  I finished off my precooked Grits and went back to Cheerios (store brand) no sugar.  I do put cinnamon sugar on my grits.  I had some soup bones with a bunch of meat I pulled out of one on my pots of beans. Added some carrots  and potatoes and served over a biscuit.   My crime scene.  I dropped a full plastic glass of Hibiscus Tea.  I try to drink 2 full glasses a day. I have to add sugar about 1/4 cup  to 2 quarts. Lunch 1 day I pulled the end of my frozen chili out if freezer.  Goulash I was out of tomato sauce.  My store brand Rotel was fire roasted and too hot and frozen cauliflower.  Mussels from freezer spaghetti and the goulash I always  boil too much macaroni.  I do like with butter. Cornbread cooked in  Air fryer.  The rest of Mac Cheese.    So good ! Another serving of those...

Grandma's Kitchen Day Y

Image
Penny's Devotional  My Grandpa had a particular way of letting Grandma know when he was finished with his meal, if he wanted more. or if he didn't like what he ate.  He had a silent system that no doubt came down from his English mother, he would turn his upside down coffee cup upright to let her know he wanted more coffee. She would notice and pour his coffee.   He would place his meal on a large plate, take his bread and sop up his plate until every crumb was gone, and his plate would be so clean you could eat off it again.  He would then turn his plate upside-down and place his dessert in the center of the back of the plate.  Then he would take a sweet bread, to sop up the remaining dessert.  He then placed his messy,  unfolded napkin on to  the upside-down plate.  If he didn't want more coffee he would turn his cup upside-down and leave the table.  This meant he he was pleased with the meal and would not return.  If ...

This beautiful poem by the Homespun Wife cause me to conjure up images of Grandma.  Join me later this morning as we visit Grandma's Kitchen.    . . . Give me a house with a nice country porch With a winding dirt drive and a blue screen door Give me some windows and curtains with lace And a soft yellow cat that's warm to embrace Give me a house with a clothesline and breeze With daisies that keep company with a stand of strong trees I'll take a brown barn in the woods out back And an old-fashioned mailbox near a full firewood stack Give me a house with some quilts and fresh bread A well-worn Bible and a billowy bed Give me a house that is blessed from above With mercy and grace and plenty of love © 'Give Me A House,' by The Homespun Wife by Colleen Eubanks  Grandma's  Cookbook JJ  https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1J5mQLp1pN/ JJ

Grandma's Kitchen Day 2

Image
Grandma's Kitchen A Devotional Study by  Penny Whittemore  . . .  As we gathered in Grandma's house there was a certain ordering which we would eat.  The men ate first,  followed by the children and women.  However the babies ate while Grandma was cooking.  You see Grandma didn't just let cook in her kitchen.  Herself and my dad were the only people I ever saw in her kitchen.   When my dad came back from the war , he stayed with his parents,  so I assumed he knew his manners while in his mother's kitchen. She also would  allow only certain people to was the dishes, usually my dad, grandpa, my mom and occasionally myself.   Grandma was a plain and simple woman who loved more than we could even imagine.  She raised her chosen during the Great  Depression era and did everything  and did everything  she could to open her home upto her two sisters and their families to all live together while the...

A Killer Clue My Review

Image
And I thought . . .  I had just finished  the audio version of book 1 so I was thrilled  to find book 2.   I must say I have really enjoyed these characters.  It is easy to tell there is planned to be a series with several installments.  Everything is wrapped up and tidied all questions answered and then a new ? posed at the end that  appears to indicate an adventure for Jane and Cam is coming up in book 3.  All the cast from book 1 returns  in book two.  Jeans daughter  Bailey joins in for a visit.   I suspect  she'll make more appearances.   The hired driver/would be writer gets Bailey's attention much to Jean's relief.   And Jean is glad that Bailey  realizes any interest in Cam even though he is rich and handsome is not in the cards.  Bailey methodically turns Cam in the direction  of Lauren his assistant.   A bit of romance may be impending in the next stor...
